The Laura Akard Scholarship
Laura Akard was born September 8, 1963 in Carmel, California. She was a lively child that excelled in the arts. Laura trained hard in her studies along with taking dance, singing, and acting lessons throughout her life. She made a name for herself in the local community as the talent you wanted to be in your shows. Laura had a gift of teaching and inspiring dancers of any background. Her choreography was on the next level of professionalism and everyone wanted Laura to teach for them or choreograph for them.
Ms. Stevie had the privilege of having Laura Akard as a teacher, mentor and choreographer. When Laura moved to Las Vegas to work professionally at MGM studios and Debbie Reynolds Casino and Theater as Dance Captains, Ms. Stevie would travel there to work with Laura on her solos and watch Laura work in rehearsals and the live shows she was in. She was a force of talent to watch on stage.
Many years later, when Ms. Stevie and Laura moved back to the peninsula, Ms. Stevie decided to open up her dance studio in 2010 with the assistance of Laura being her first faculty member to sign on. Laura was a key part of Ms. Stevie opening her studio. Laura was always said that you can do anything if you put in the work.
Laura Akard was the real deal. Tragically, in her short life here on earth, Laura struggled with mental illness. She found it difficult to overcome the illness and seek help. In January 2023, Laura was struck and killed by a drunk driver in Monterey. A devastating loss to our arts community and to Ms. Stevie.
It's not always easy to spot those who are struggling. Instead of judging or tearing each other down, we need to support each other more than ever.
To honor Laura’s memory, Ms. Stevie has decided to dedicate a scholarship in Laura’s name to a current student of RockStar Dance Studio®. The recipient will be announced at the end of showcase. The scholarship will be rewarded to an individual that shows us they are willing to put in the hard work in each class they attend at the studio. This is not about the being the best dancer in the class. This is about seeing an individual that shows real potential of being a shining light in our world.
